Inconsistency in the VAR decisions shown tonight as Jesus gets kicked after laying the ball off.
Far more contact than the pathetic Fulham one given the other night, but penalty not given to Man City.
As others have said, its not really a help on the opinion decisions. Only worth it on the offside/ball out of play decisions really.

If VAR is used just for offsides and out of play decisions ( like the Antonio cross ) it would be a good way of introduction to use.
Get that protocol right first as a trial and then discuss its use for further actions later.
I think it would be silly to go in with a one Big Bang cover all situations scenario.

I've only seen the Man Utd penalty once but to me it shouldn't have been awarded as Fred is offside as soon as Mata passes the ball. The fact that Mata was fouled before the ball got to Fred is irrelevant as the offside occurs when the ball is played, not when it's received, and Mata is fouled after the offside pass. Or did I miss something?

Ultimately it means that only clearly wrong decisions which are not open to any interpretation will get overturned. Any decision with a subjective element will remain the referee's original call. That's a very narrow remit but probably a good thing.
Totally agree regarding the Fulham penalty however the issue was that the referee gave it, not that VAR failed to overrule it. The outcome would have been exactly the same had VAR not been in play.
I think the real contorversy will occur if and when VAR overrules a decision that a lot of people think was correct in the first place.

If I've said this once, I've said it a thousand times. VAR should never be used for subjective decisions such as fouls/penalties. This was decisively proved at Fulham on Sunday.
That was as clear an example of cheating/diving as you'll see, yet for some ludicrous reason the VAR bloke gave a penalty.
All you VAR fanatics claim it will eradicate refereeing mistakes. Well, you're wrong, aren't you, as this incident clearly demonstrated.
Anyway, why are the FA fucking around with this when they haven't even be able to issue clear guidelines as to how it should be used; see Burnley game.
Also, until they recognise that football is a contact sport and act accordingly, every Salah type will throw himself to the floor at the mearest hint of a touch.

VAR is needed. That is quite clear. What needs sorting out is how VAR is used and interpreted in the game. As others pointed out that Burnley game was a joke. Stopping a penalty mid run up to decide the ball through was off-side. Must've been at least four minutes prior to the penalty. Joke.
Another point, in the world cup the referee's went off the pitch and looked at the screen themselves. It was exciting but it then caused mayhem as the players who the decision went against did the usual and all rounded on the ref.
Are the carrying on with this?
Only I think it much better that the decision is made upstairs and the referee is, in essence, simply passing on a decision made and so can distance themselves from it and avoid being surrounded.
The other problem is with VAR is that what will happen when the ref makes a decision on his own is that the players will keep referring him to VAR if they don't like it. So will teams be limited to VAR requests?
Finally, who saw that plum Morata on Saturday making TV shapes with his hand to the ref only to be told VAR is not being used. Prick.

Piss poor use of VAR by a piss poor referee and his colleagues.

Bit ludicrous that the Burnley player had to stop his run up for the pen so that they could decide that someone who wasn’t really offside was.
Need to sharpen up the decision making before it turns into a saga.
Perhaps they could use someone who understands football instead of the collection of knucklehead referees that currently stink out the game.

The thing with VAR is it will still be down to someone giving their own decision as is currently done by the referee. The top 6 will still get most decisions going their way as it is written in the rules.

For the record, I have reviewed the footage, and I have to admit to not knowing how I missed that handball.
That said, I was FUMING over some utterly SHITE defensive work in the 30 seconds leading up to the goal, so that would have been a distraction.

Can't wait for this. Saw the Salah dive on Saturday and their goal last night, both incorrect.
Hopefully it will make it more of a level playing field.

Just watched the Salah "penalty" against Newcastle. Jesus, that's embarrassing. He folds himself in half and "falls" in a really unnatural way. How was that given?
And no retrospective action as there was "contact"

Coming back to last night and seeing that the papers call out the handball, there is another thing.
Someone had to look at that goal and change it from an Ogbonna own goal to a Redmond goal. And nothing legal on him is anywhere near the ball.
With all its problems, VAR gets that right and has to come in.
